1. After your pup has completed the second series of vaccinations, enroll him or her in a positive reinforcement puppy class. A pup needs to learn bite inhibition, how to play appropriately with other pups, and good manners.
2. The whole family should be involved in the training of the puppy at class. Michael enjoys working with children and their parents.
3. Teach your pup "what to do" instead of "what not to do" and make it fun.
4. Socialize your pup with other friendly people and dogs. Introduce your pup to new and strange sounds "slowly" to build confidence with new situations.
5. Nothing in life is for free. Expect calm appropriate behavior before giving your pup anything (food, treats, pets, play sessions).
6. Concentrate on rewarding your dog for good things he does and realize puppies do what comes naturally for puppies. Manage the pup’s environment to prevent the behaviors you don’t like from occurring.
7. Train your pup frequently but for short sessions (10-15 minutes) at a time.
8. Feed your pup regularly timed meals. Don't allow him or her to self-feed throughout the day. This will keep the pup's food fresher, allow you to better time the need for eliminations and provide motivation for learning good manners.
9. Give your pup plenty of fun exercise (playing fetch, chasing after you in the back yard, going for short walks) and time for naps.
